Working to Provide a Better Quality of Life for the ALS Community
Nancy Pottruck Bowling Tournament
Florida Bowling Event a Big Success !
When Michael Feldman decided to organize a fund-raising bowling tournament for his mitzvah project, he didn’t realize how much support he would receive from his community. His project received lots of community support including news articles and monetary donations from people who either know Nancy or someone affected by the disease.
Michael decided to put together a bowling tournament to benefit the ALS Foundation for Life in honor of his aunt, Nancy Pottruck, who suffers from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. “It saddens me to watch someone I love so much not be able to do all the fun things and play games with me any longer,” states Michael. “My aunt is not as active as she used to be. She can’t walk anymore without support and she uses a feeding tube,” he explains. “But the biggest change is that she can’t hug me anymore because she has lost most of her forearm muscles.”
Michael modeled his event after the ALS Foundation for Life’s annual charitable bowling event held in Boston. The southern Florida event, held on November 18, was a big success, bringing together a community and raising over $7,000. Michael’s mom, Lisa, said “everyone had loads of fun and enjoyed the raffles. Michael learned a lot from the experience, like how he can really make a difference in someone’s life. It has also increased his awareness of ALS and how his Aunt is affected.” It was a great family event not only for others but Bill, Lisa, Blake, and Ben.
“I am proud that the money I helped raise will hopefully help someone who is in financial need, who is suffering from ALS” stated Michael Feldman after the event.
